Self-Publishing
When working directly with book authors, our approach differs from that of traditional publishing houses. We are part of the fast growing self-publishing segment of the industry. The author who self-publishes has complete control over the creative, production and marketing aspects of the publishing process. If you self-publish, you are responsible for the marketing and distribution of your work and for paying the printing costs. However, you also retain the copyright and all profits made from sales.
With the advent of on-demand printing, it is possible for an author to self-publish at a very low cost. We accept production runs as low as 100 books. In addition, we store your manuscript digitally so that when your initial supply of books is exhausted, additional copies can be printed at the press of a button. Thus, start-up costs are held to a minimum and, if the market responds, you can produce additional quantities quickly, at low cost.
In order to keep your costs low, we offer several standard book sizes (although others can be used at an additional cost). Our standard book interiors are black ink on either 8.5" x 11" or 5.5" x 8.5" paper size. Color printing of interior pages can be done at a modest additional cost. Book covers are available in either color (one- or multi-) or black/white. Binding options include perfect, spiral (plastic comb) or 3-ring.
The Self-Publishing Advantage
Authors often have difficulty being accepted by a traditional publishing house. Sales of a book by an unknown author can be difficult to forecast; therefore, long-run publishers are not interested. This is one advantage of self-publishing. You can plumb your market to determine its depth and breadth without requiring a long print run. This is also an excellent way to approach niche and local/regional markets.
But there are a number of other advantages to self-publishing. These include higher profitability, timing, control of editing and design, and retention of property rights. Why settle for a royalty that is usually far less than 15 percent when you can retain all the revenues from sales of your book? Self-publishing allows you to do just that. Moreover, the WORDPRO Press can normally complete the printing of a new book within several weeks of getting approval of the proof copy. That means you save time and money. Finally, you control both the editing of the final product and the property rights to it. In the long-run, this can mean extra dollars in your pocket.
And lastly, don't forget that not all books are published to make a profit. Sharing of knowledge or your ideas may be reason enough to self-publish.
